Carnivale 2009
For 10 balmy days and nights each May (May 22-31st 2009), the festival of Carnivale takes over the seaside resort village of Port Douglas offering a chance to flirt with life and engage in a kaleidoscope of free and ticketed events. There's music, arts, sports, food, culture and all styles of entertainment...and absolutely every reason you need to head to Port Douglas!
Now 17 years old, Carnivale has grown from a street fiesta to a broad program which involves the entire community.
There are family favourites like the Macrossan Street Parade, the Meridien Marina Seafood Extravaganza, The Four Mile Beach Day and brand new this year The Great Aussie Arvo Concert.
Get a taste of the tropics at the Sheraton Mirage Longest lunch, Quicksilver's Food, Wine & A Taste of Port, or watch great Aussie chefs compete in the James Squire Gourmet Gladiators. Sport lovers can play in the Port Douglas Golf Challenge held at the Sea Temple Golf Club and Mirage Country Club, watch the AME Carnivale Bull Ride Spectacular or catch the action in the Audi Centre Cairns Clipper Cup Sailing regatta.
Last year, Port Douglas welcomed thousands of visitors from Australia and overseas, who partied with locals of the village under the clear blue skies of May and found, as those who live there already know, there is so much to celebrate in this tropical wonderland.
THEME
Carnivale Managers the Port Douglas Chamber of Commerce, have announced the 2009 theme will be “Icons of Douglas"
“We are inviting people to interpret what the icons of the Douglas region are to them,” said Chamber chairman Mr Dobbs. “You might feel Four Mile Beach is iconic, so theme your float a beach; or you might decide on our icons of The Great Barrier Reef and The Daintree Rainforest and adapt that to your own style; or you might choose an era to be iconic – for example the 80s were a significant era in the development of Port Douglas and so were the 1800s and the Gold Rush.”
