YABUSAME TO THRILL CROWDS AS FAMILIES HEAD TO PORT FOR CARNIVALE ACTION

Port Douglas, 14th May, 2014 – Thousands of families are expected to converge on Port Douglas as Carnivale action gets underway from May 16 to 25.

The premier events for the little ones are the Macrossan Street Parade on Friday, May 16, which this year has been themed Carnivale, and the fun and action of the Four Mile Beach Day on Saturday, May 17.

Each year, about 10,000 line the streets to watch the parade, which is a true community event and includes motorised floats, bands, dancers, and more.

The spectacle and colour of the parade is amazing, and the fun continues afterwards with the fun fair, entertainment and fireworks display around 9pm.

Port Douglas Carnivale general manager Roy Weavers said revellers would also be able to enjoy the festivities before the parade with Market Park opening from 5pm with entertainment, music, street theatre, market stalls, rides and amusements.

“We are expecting fantastic support for the Street Parade, which will actually kick off 30 minutes earlier at 6.30pm this year.

“90.9 FM Radio Port Douglas will also be broadcasting live from Coco’s on Macrossan Street this Friday night from 6pm to 8pm and for the first time ever, we will have Carnivale flash mob when you least expect it.”

On Saturday, Four Mile Beach will be transformed into a playground for locals and visitors alike. The action will kick off from 12 noon with family fun, packed with beach cricket, treasure hunts, a sandcastle competition, skydivers, medieval jousting, and beach busking.

There will also be the Yabusame Tournament, which will commence at 2pm. “This is an Australian first and a real coup for Port Douglas Carnivale, and we are incredibly excited to welcome these talented athletes from Japan,” he said.

Other family events include Market Day on Sunday, May 18, and The Backyard Games at Rex Smeal Park, with highlights on the day including a motorised esky race and a helicopter lolly drop at 1pm. The Backyard Games will start at 10am.
