Exemplar Clipper Cup

EXEMPLAR CLIPPER CUP OFF TO A SAILING START

Port Douglas, 14th May, 2014 – With a record number of entries, organisers of this year’s Exemplar Clipper Cup are predicting the strongest year yet for competitors with a number of contingents coming from outside the region.

Port Douglas Yacht Club commodore Colin Simpson said more than 25 boats had registered with still a few days left for registration, and competitors were coming from across the region including Townsville and Cairns.

“The Exemplar Clipper Cup is fast becoming one of Tropical North Queensland’s premier yachting events and we have at least eight yachts from visiting clubs coming up for the week as well as our locals competing this year,” he said.

This year the fleet has four divisions with two racing keel boat divisions, a multihull division and a sports boat/J24 division.

“It will be interesting on the start line. First up will be the fast boats in division one, then there will be the sport boats, which are nimble and quick and accelerate very quickly, followed by the larger catamarans and  cruising division, which will be a bit slower.”

Mr Simpson said socially there would also be a huge program of entertainment to keep crews entertained during the week of competition from May 19 to 23.

“We have six local bands playing throughout the week (nightly) from this Sunday until Friday, and all locals and visitors are encouraged to come down and enjoy the fantastic entertainment and vibe of the sailing regatta.

“Entertainment is being provided by Tony George, The Barbary Coasters, Timber & Wood, Kim Hurley & Band, Clarketown and Gusman.

“As always, this event wouldn’t happen without the support of our sponsors – Exemplar Limousines and Coaches, Mickey Inc, Riddock Insurance, Port FM, Nautical Marine Supplies, XXXX Gold, Bacardi and Fine Wine partners.
