Prepare to Party Port Douglas

It is party time in Port Douglas as the seaside town prepares to celebrate all things tropical with Port Douglas Carnivale in full swing this weekend.

The festivities officially kick off on Friday 23 May, with The Longest Lunch at Sheraton Grand Mirage Resort Port Douglas, serving up a showcase of local produce and award-winning cuisine along the resort’s iconic palm-lined entryway.

Later that afternoon, the famous Macrossan Street Parade will take over the town centre from 6.30pm, with the theme ‘Tropical Treasures’ set to inspire a colourful display of floats, costumes, dancers and performers.

This year, for the first time, fireworks will launch from a barge on the water, with the park areas in and around Rex Smeal Park offering the best vantage point.

Families can get the party started early with the ACE DJ-led Kids Disco outside Rattle N Hum from 4.30pm, and Sideshow Alley will be open at Market Park for rides and amusements from this Wednesday.

On Saturday 24 May, Four Mile Beach transforms into a playground for The Tin Shed Family Beach Day, featuring giant kites, sand sculpting, water sports with Windswell, Dreamstate games and live entertainment on the beach.

Over at Pullman Port Douglas Sea Temple Resort, the Temple of Fire poolside party will heat up the evening with DJ Safire, saxophonists and fire performances.

Music lovers will head to Rex Smeal Park across Friday, Saturday and Sunday for the new Savannah Sounds music festival, presented by Douglas Shire Council with major sponsor Newsport, featuring artists including Zoe Badwi, Sheppard, The Black Sorrows, Jolyon Petch and Glenn Shorrock.

The magic continues after dark with Tropic Lights, as Sugar Wharf and a feature wall on Macrossan Street are transformed into a living reef with large-scale marine life projections created by Maker Port Douglas, Bio Quest and Culture Mechanics.

Douglas Shire Mayor Lisa Scomazzon said Port Douglas Carnivale was a celebration for all ages, bringing the community together and showcasing the best of the region.

“Carnivale is a time when locals and visitors can come together and enjoy everything that makes Port Douglas so special – our community spirit, our creativity and the natural beauty of where we live,” Cr Scomazzon said.

Sunday 25 May offers a relaxing finish to the weekend with the family-friendly Poolside Fiesta at Oaks Resort Port Douglas, the Port Douglas Sunday Markets at Market Park, the Tropical Destinations Photography Exhibition and the Go Troppo Art Exhibition at Sugar Wharf.

For the energetic, the Douglas Dash beach and trail run returns, starting at Four Mile Beach and finishing at Rex Smeal Park.

The Carnivale program also features Maho Magic Bar at Dixie Park, Sea Circus Treasured Tales, the Pooch Party for four-legged friends, the Carnivale Family Showcase and the Forever Reef Project tours at the Superyacht Marina.
